Poker is known as a form of gambling and has basically taken the gaming world by storm. Tournaments are held world wide and online games are available for anybody who has an interest in playing them. Poker, being a game of skill, is not the average boring card game and Poker takes on various forms and is played with and psychological element and strategy. The players determine their actions based on a logical, yet psychological, reasons and probabilities of winning. Out of all the poker games that are available, Texas Hold’em is the most popular form of poker. The poker games differ in the way the cards are dealt, how many rounds are played, the bets being placed and what is required to win.
Poker, as a card game, consists of a dealer, dealing the cards and the players placing their bets. In casual games the dealer usually has a white button that is rotated clockwise to indicate a nominal dealer who determines the betting order. The norm is dealing five cards, but this will obviously not necessarily be the number of cards being dealt, dependant on the type of poker that is being played. One of the players is usually required to make a forced bet in the first round. The dealer will then shuffle the cards, the card pack will be cut by the person sitting one chair to the right of the dealer, and the appropriate numbers of cards are then dealt one at a time to all the players. The cards get dealt face-up or face-down, dependent on what type of poker is being played. When the first round of betting starts, the game comes into full play, moving to the left. Players are required to, on their turn, match or raise the maximum bet, if they feel they have a chance of winning the pot or if they are bluffing, or they should fold, dropping out of the rest of the round completely. In between the hand, players can be dealt different cards, replacing some of the cards in their hand, or they can be dealt additional cards, dependant on what type of poker is being played.
The round will come to an end after all the players has matched the bet, raised the bet or folded. The bets are then gathered and placed in the central pot. When all the players at the table have folded, except one, that person automatically wins the pot, irrelevant of what cards they might be holding in their hand. After the final betting has taken place at the end of the round and there are still a few players left at the table, the cards are revealed and the winning hand takes the pot.
Bluffing comes into play when one of the players pretend to have a good hand, placing a high bet and signaling the other players, through perhaps, confidence, that he or she is going to win the pot. When a person “bluffs” they do not have a good hand and they are taking their chances in case the other players decide to fold.
In the final round, when there is more than one player left at the table, a showdown is required. A showdown takes place by means of revealing all the previously hidden cards and based on the poker variant, the best hand will win the pot.
Even though there are many forms of poker, the variations all contain similar hand ranking hierarchy and patterns, which makes it possible for the player to use the same strategy on all games. Variations entail the “straight game”, almost never used anymore. It is the basic form of Poker where a full hand is dealt to the players and each round a bet is placed, while raising and re-raising the bet is allowed. The “Stud game” is played in the form of “Seven-card stud”. It is played by dealing five cards. Each player is dealt two additional cards. Three cards are dealt face-down whilst four cards are dealt face-up. The player gets a choice of selecting the five best cards for his hand. The “Community game” consists of a variation of the stud and community cards. The Stud cards are dealt face-down to a player, giving him an incomplete hand. The Community cards are dealt face-up to the centre of the table. Community cards are used by the players to select the best five-card hand possible for them. Texas hold-em and Omaha are two the most popular games played that are part of the Community family.
Poker is one of the most played and enjoyed card games in the World. With its intricate ways of playing and extremely accurate strategies, it guarantees hours of entertainment to those who have the patience to play the game.
